albany is the first place he gets a week without drinking. then it’s utica, new paltz. these places hardly last long and with his instability and unreliable work habits he slowly weaves in maintenance and janitorial duties into any work he can find. in sturbridge he gets drunk at an outdoor folk concert, and wakes up in jail with a broken wrist and missing memory. he stops in weston, before securing a job in martha’s vineyard that lasts for about two weeks before they fire him, no questions asked for showing up reeking of alcohol. in newburyport he manages to get a bigger hit at sobriety, finding work at a VETERAN’S HOME, rationalizing that he can drink -- just not on the nights he works the next day. a month goes by, before throwing it all away in a three day bender.
with little left to his name, he buys another bus ticket further north.

when the bus stops in frazier, new hampshire it’s disturbing to daniel that for the first time in years TONY speaks up. this is the place, he says and dan not having much choice or room to be picky, chooses to listen and get off the bus. but he does find it a welcoming, inviting town, some . . . interesting energy emenants from the people, the buildings, the trees. slowly, he finds work, thanks to billy freeman and casey kingsley. first at TEENYTOWN with MAINTENANCE and GROUNDSKEEPING, then work as a JANITOR before being promoted to ORDERLY at the helen rivington hospice.
it’s in the fall of 2001 that he seeks help for his alcoholism, attending aa after THE SHINING has come back, stronger and begins giving him horrendous night terrors and precognitive visions.

after securing a sponsor in casey kingsley, he’s instructed to do ninety meetings in ninety days. it’s at one of these meetings that he writes out an unfamiliar name:

with three years of sobriety under his belt he moves into the helen rivington hospice as a ‘ resident orderly ’ to do his job better. the shining has offered him but ONE USEFUL TALENT, one that isn’t marred in trauma, or blood. a sacrament that gives him the moniker DOCTOR SLEEP. he just sits with those on the cusp, helping them smoothly transfer from this world -- to the next.

fffffffffffff1978 - 1983 , FLORIDA .
after colorado, daniel and his mother move first to virginia in search of a NEW START but end up settling in st. petersburg, florida. they also claimed a large settlement both from jack torrance’s life insurance policy and a wrongful death claim of negligence from the overlook hotel’s managers.
due to daniel’s abilities, it drew the attention of some of the DEAD TENANTS of the burned remains of the overlook hotel. a woman by the name of mrs. massey follows him all the way to florida in order to finish the job of KILLING HIM that she started. she fails, but this terrifies danny who seeks the help of dick hallorann. having the SHINE himself, dick teaches daniel about LOCKBOXES, somewhere where he can lock away dark spirits to not harm him again.
two years later, horace derwent from the overlook hotel finds him and meets the same fate.
upon entry to MIDDLE SCHOOL, daniel feels set apart from the other kids. they look at him strangely, his penchant for staring develops into an aversion to eye contact
and even if danny isn’t being haunted by those dead visitors from the overlook it hasn’t stopped any of his other sensitivities. he encounters plenty of gruesome sights, thoughts, and other experiences that make him a very timid, but combative boy.
1986 - 1991 .ffffddddddfffffffff
when he hits his early teens, daniel fails with coping not only with his trauma due to the violence suffered at the overlook and at the hands of his father but also with a rapidly intensifying psychic skillset. without an outlet he draws further inward, displaying despondent and aggressive behaviors. he gets into numerous physical fights as well as countless nights of underage drinking.
“ despite ” this he manages to graduate high school with honors. and begins looking forward to college.
1991 - 1995 .ffffddddddffffffff
enrolling in college later the following fall, he begins studying palliative care, taking numerous healthcare aligned courses. this never strikes him as odd, though he had never really though much of the elderly nor the dying. partially it might be due to his inclination to want to understand. much of his college years is filled with drinking heavily on the weekends, finding that it helps the most with any of his SHINING ‘ SIDE - EFFECTS ’
in the middle of his schooling, wendy torrance is diagnosed with an advanced stage of lung cancer. the prognosis isn’t the best, and is intensified with visions of thousands and thousands of DEATHFLIES on his mother’s face. she passes away a mere nine months later in the early winter of ‘94.
not long after, he is given a suspended license due to drinking while driving. with this blow, dan’s drinking progressively gets worse as if fearing seeing his mother’s ghost mostly. scraping by the edge of his teeth, he manages to graduate with an associates in palliative care and begins looking at work in his field of study.
1996 - 1999 , FLORIDA , OKLAHOLMA , fff

finding work far from the east coast takes him first to tulsa, oklahoma where he worked as an ORDERLY in the tulsa hospice. this doesn’t last long however, and slowly becomes a trend. at this point, dan is a high functioning alcoholic, drinking to put himself to sleep some nights. some nights become most nights in time. tulsa becomes jackson becomes macon becomes florence.
eventually he finds himself out in wilmington, north carolina on the morning of a one night stand. late on rent, out of money, and fearing possible arrest due to a raucous bar fight the night before, he makes a choice that would haunt him for near fifteen years to come. he stole seventy dollars from the passed out woman who he’d shared the bed with last night, and neglects to inform authorities about a young child with obvious signs of bruising, and abuse.
this action is the rock bottom for him, drinking at odd intervals paired with tortuous stints of sobriety. it’s also in this era that dick hallorann dies, though daniel finds this fact out almost a decade later, not having attended the funeral.
fffffffffffFFFFFFfffthe shining is an extra-perceptionary ability including but not limited to ; telepathy , precognition , empathy , astral projection , possession , body swapping , mental influencing , and ability to see the dead whether as ghosts , figments of the past , or very deadly, dangerous revenants.these are some descriptions of how these abilities manifest in daniel and are specific to him and his character .
fffffDISPLACED SOUNDS & VISIONS.
there are times where danny is plagued with visions of often random, out of context items / places / etc that correlate with his clairvoyant nature. this can be something like redrum appearing on walls and mirrors and windows to a hat rolling down the street like a tumbleweed invisible to all but him. in the same vein he’s able to sometimes hear events if he’s physically there, like a gunshot or a party. but the same outcome, they’re disjointed, without further information. though more than likely, they relate to something important, like something he needs to know, or something about someone he knows, or will know ( the hat being rose the hat’s hat – haha ) it’s indeterminant, random, and infrequent.
fffffABILITY TO SEE SPIRITS.
his most vivid ability aside from the one below, is his ability to see through the veil. though not only related to ghosts it’s the biggest and strongest example. for instance, if he were to walk into some place that was haunted he’d probably come across a ghost or two. it’s his innate energy and power that draws spirits, haunts, ghosts from the darkness. his strength is also their strength, causing a sort of spiritual link that they can use. in this, a ghost could touch or harm someone in danny’s vicinity or danny himself if he were to linger too long. and after how the overlook abused his power to make itself stronger, he’s very hesitant to be in a position to be subjected to that again.
fffffPRECOGNITION , POSTCOGNITION.
a part of the first ability, but explained. often times he just gets feeling, notions or flat out facts that have manifest in his head. the most prominent kind is precognition or being able to predict the future, but honestly he’s not really predicting as he’s keyed into other forms of light, energy and spirit that make those ideas available to him. postcognition is almost always person-to-person based, or location based. if he was talking with someone, he could probably know in the most basic, sense a subtle fact. like if it was raining that day for example, or if they had lost something. it also works in tandem with both above listed in that he could see the ghost themselves, and then see how they died. sometimes in vague, hazy detail, often times violent, horrible detail. he shines bright, and that means vivid.
fffffMIND LINKS - TELEPATHY..
at the most basic sense, dan is able to read people’s minds. though it’s not a constant stream. feelings, short phrases when he’s tuned in. this also comes across as intuition, dan sometimes knowing what someone was briefly thinking about, or what they’re about to say. however, he is extremely conservative with this ability, dampening his “receivers” and only is able to catch extremely loud, or emotional people as a result. he thinks it’s an invasion of privacy, though there are times where it just comes through regardless. this is also possible to use as a form of communication, reaching out his consciousness, his voice to others. people who shine less like billy freeman aren’t able to respond in kind, but others like dan himself and more powerful like abra, can have whole discussions sometimes not even using words or voices, but pictures, or ideas.
ffffffffffffffASTRAL PROJECTION.
in a basic sense it’s the ability to separate from his body, and reach out his consciousness. he’s been able to do this since he was five, first doing it with his father. however, when he’s older he’s able to go at long distances, sometimes appearing to the person as a physical entity. this works in tandem with the astral location mention. but it’s how he is also able to understand some things about people, sometimes travelling through them. it’s not something he’s entirely practiced in, or fluent in. his most successful display being actual possession, using abilities the other party had ( telekinesis ) to crash a car.
ffffffffffffffASTRAL LOCATION.
pretty much like above, but more specific and a lot less taxing. when focusing on an object, or person dan is able to discern a general location. it’s not an ability he uses really ever, but if he concentrates he can zero in on someone. he can do this with a picture of a person, channeling all those receptors in his head outward until a signature is picked up.
ffffffffffffffSENSING SHINE.
a simple ability, not even really an ability but dan is able to sus out pretty quickly in most cases if someone is like him, something he often keeps to himself, knowing his own need for privacy but he’d be quick to assist, or support if necessary.
ffffffffffffffDEATHFLIES.
this is a rather unique ability of his that warrants it’s own sort of blurb. simply put, he has the morbid ability to foretell death. the flies appear, on people that are ill or dying. however, this isn’t an exact or foolproof ability. for example, they appeared on his mother when she was dying of cancer. they obscured his vision of her face so much that it was difficult to look at her. they also appeared on his friend billy, who only had a couple. with quick intervention, they were able to save his life with a quick operation. on the opposite end, dan largely works at a retirement / hospice home and for his entire time working there, the deathflies rarely appeared on those who were left there to wait and die. it’s unclear how it works, if connection needs to be established personally, or if it’s a manifestation of intuition made with a dire sense of urgency.

after the overlook some of the ( ghosties ) had been able to follow him and his mother from colorado, to florida. mrs. massey from 217 was the first. this terrified danny, causing him to briefly become nonverbal, until dick hallorann taught him a trick his grandma taught him. she had the shining as well in her own way. dick taught him how to create a box in his head, where he could lock up mrs. massey for good. two years later, horace derwent paid him a visit, he locked him up too. as for how many, it’s as many as necessary – and it is possible for them to just disintegrate within.

fffff CHARACTERIZATION . being a main point of view character in both books , there is an incredible wealth of dan's character , thoughts , and general disposition . however , being five in one book and spanning eight - early forties , i tend to draw more heavily towards DOCTOR SLEEP ( 2013 ) for inspiration , influence , and reference as well as ewan mcgregor's performance in the 2019 film of the same name . daniel has been through a lot of horror , trauma , abuse , and doesn't begin doctor sleep as the "best" version of himself . he's prone to avoidance , aggression with anger issues to put it lightly and this has got him into trouble in the past . however , at his core he is kind of heart , and would offer his help with perfect strangers if need be .

- MAIN VERSE - paging doctor sleep - takes place in the "meat" of doctor sleep. dan, having practically been on the road for nearly a decade -- hopping from town to town, he's finally hoping to find a place he can settle down in. happening upon frazier, new hampshire is more a blessing than he could ever have hoped for. he begins building stability, with a maintenance and landscaping job at teenytown, a local community project and eventually winds up working at the town hospice, the helen rivington. it's here that he truly begins to hit his stride, however his difficulties with alcoholism haven't left him entirely. and there's the matter of THE SHINING coming back with near full force. at his wits end with his problem with drinking, and not wanting to give up again with everything he's built he reaches out, gets help, and begins attending aa. during this time, he also develops a reputation, his talent with death, dying, and outright intution has come into great use at the hospice. he frequently attends to the dying breath of residents, and rumors swirl about the hospice about their unconventional resident doctor. to dan, he feels as if he's found a great purpose for himself.

- YOUTH - shining like fire
still inundated by nightmares and visions after the horror of the overlook, danny torrance tries his best to get through life. hiding his abilities, pretending he doesn't see or hear the things he senses from other people, or the dead that he runs into.
- HIGH SCHOOL - it's ' better ' this way
self-explanatory, but the shining is slowly intensifying, driving him to poor choices such as teenage drinking, cutting classes, and getting into fights. it's not a good time :(
- TWENTIES - can't outrun yourself
after the death of his mother in his early twenties, daniel finds it difficult to keep on a viable track falling deeper and deeper into alcoholism. he frequently travels
all across the eastern united states. taking on odd jobs such as maintenance or janitorial to keep himself stable but they never last long.

takes place in the bulk of the doctor sleep plot, when dan is hot on the true knot's trail. he traverse all over the country, until he lands back in COLORADO where it all started.
- POST CANON - shine on
after defeating the true knot in the same location that had taken so much from him, daniel continues on a similar path as before. achieving fifteen years sobriety, he takes to teaching abra the tricks of the trade, before setting off on a mission to help other kids like he was, like abra is. none of them should live in fear of their abilities, nor be caught without ways to defend themselves.

throughout his life he's come across a few people that have been through similar circumstance to him. whether they SHINE or not is irrelevant, he wants to provide a place, using similar format to his alcoholics anonymous meetings to provide an outlet for these people, psychic, haunted, or otherwise. anyone is welcome to come to a meeting, held every tuesday at an old VFW hall, and share, or just listen. daniel knows how good it can feel knowing you're not the only one who's been through things that are just . . . too hard to explain, or impossible for someone to believe.
- DETECTIVE - full dark , no stars - after years of being on the run from his gift, daniel has begun actively seeking out people to help. whether that falls into assisting local police departments or striking out on his own agency he has a knack for finding things, and more often -- people. after solving a few cases he develops a reputation of being someone who gets difficult cases solved. he's also begun to branch out into private detective work with a specialty in the paranormal.

a ) it was supposed to be a simple delivery. the riv needed a new engine, and dan supposed the least he could do was drive down to the specialty shop out in boston, mass to pick it up. however, shortly upon arriving an event known only as THE PULSE occurs, sending daniel's world into complete chaos. people go mad, engaging in homicidal rampages as explosions, and car crashes compound throughout the city. strangely enough, he awakes with a massive headache, a bleeding nose and his shining seems to be all but gone, unable to ( zip -zip ) with his niece back in new hampshire, daniel begins to fear the unthinkable. without anyway safe way to contact his family, dan embarks on a trek north hoping that those he cares about are safe.
b ) it would be just the two of them, much to his mother's worry. but the demons of the past, of his father's anger and alcoholism -- they're better now, in control. and . . . his parents, are happy, for better or for worse. he's eleven, and his dad got them tickets to a grand train expo in boston. he's eleven when the pulse erupts, his hands on the phone and he's calling his mom. his father grabs the device from his hands, throwing it far, further as he hears his mother's voice answer the other end. he's eleven, and chaos erupts, violence breaks out, and people begin killing, and dying. he watches with his father, in horror at the sight, before running from an assailant, a man in a suit, blood dripping from his head. they have to get back home, to wendy -- they hope she's alright, because it's the people who were on their phones that go mad.

- FEAR / THE WALKING DEAD - a plague of flies
age range: 25+
bio - it begins with a few deaths, then a sickness -- quarantine quickly devolves to evacuation. dan makes to escape with his small entourage, and some friends from work. deenie's brother tags along, a man not liked by dan due to his habit of breaking shit when he got angry. but things, they were okay as they began adapting as best they could to this new world. he takes up at a doctor's station as an assistant, deenie works in food organization and the brother is with the runners.
a year later, things would end in blood and death. the brother's violence escalating until dan returns to their house one day to see the young boy ( only three ) dead, head caved in. justice is of little reprieve, even if deenie's brother is exiled from the small community. it's not good enough. however, nothing could ever replace the woman's young son, leading her to end her own life nearly a week after her son's. this prompts daniel to leave safe harbor forever, hunting down the murderous brother responsible and dispensing his own rage-filled justice at the end of his fists and a knife.
when the man lies cold in the dirt ( where he belongs ), dan begins travelling alone, everything in his life has always ended in tragedy so he feels it best to keep to himself for now.

bio - there had always been something a little strange about the young torrance boy. quiet, with blue eyes that stared into the very heart of things. for the large majority of his childhood, danny could claim that there was love in his home. his parents, despite their troubles made efforts to put it aside for the sake of their son. his father, was an english teacher at hawkins high, his mother, a clerk for town hall. a normal family, would be an apt observation of the young family of three. however, danny's father had spent many a night coming home reeking of an acrid drink. and the boy himself, could read people, better than anyone else. he knew of the bad thing (drinking) that his father did, he knew that his parents thought of DIVORCE sometimes. yes, danny was gifted in the worst of ways -- being a silver key into people's minds, into the future, into the past. sometimes he'd have dreams of things before they happened, could tell you where you misplaced something. but the true extent of his "gift" isn't understood until he begins having nightmares a monster, a monster broken free, a boy going missing. his parents hear about will byers, going missing not days later.
the monster, daniel knows has taken the missing boy, that it's dangerous and can hurt people. but these are just the designs of a frightened child, right ? afraid of being thought of any weirder, he keeps his thoughts more or less to himself. but then people start going missing, dead, danny KNOWS -- he knows, and it's his terrible privilege to not only see, but feel them as they happen. this results in horrible nightmares that have him screaming as he wakes.
- STAR WARS - blood of the order - ( prequels )
age range: 13-30
bio - ever since he was young, there was a sense about him. he could always feel things, as they were or as they were about to be. he had grown up well enough, his father an archivist and his mother content enough to just raise the boy as her work, taking to painting in her spare time. soon enough, the jedis would become aware of the young force-sensitive and seek to take him to coruscant to train him in his innate abilities. he's six when they come, hard to be parted from his parents but in time he would also learn to see the jedi as a kind of family too. danny is strong in the force, able to easily influence others, and as it is discovered is precognizant as well. even though he was not a natural fighter at first, he discovers a wrath and a fury hidden deep in his core. tapping into that makes him a rather formidable opponent.
he is taken under the wing of mace windu, and taught strength, diplomacy, resolve, and how to reign in, and harness that fire within him. growing up, he eventually becomes a knight, during the clone wars, on the field during the execution of ORDER 66. doing the best he can to stave off the attack, he sees those he trusted, and considered friends turn, killing those he had known all his life. he's shot straight in the arm with a blaster, losing a hold on his lightsaber as he is fleeing, hoping this was all a mistake. it disturbs him to learn of the extent of the attack, and how many friends and jedi were lost.
taking refuge in the outer rim, he goes into hiding -- becoming a scavenger, and a scrapper as he begins healing. always, hes waiting for that call to action, the call of the other SURVIVING jedi, to fight once again.
- SUPERNATURAL - appointment in samarra - UNDERCONSTRUCTION -- when he was a child, the only place monsters could be were in books. the ones his father wrote, or his mother would scare off before bed. though there were things about the world that the young boy could understand, things his parents didn't . . . he believed them. that monsters couldn't get them, that he was safe. however, that failed when one of his parents became a monster themselves.
he was five, and it was his father -- coming back from work wrong. the boy, he could sense things sometimes, and it wasn't him, but a scary, stranger. which confused him, because it was his father, his face, his body ! still, even if he could SEE the mask, he couldn't protect himself, nor his mother from the MONSTER'S RAGE.
it rose up against them, the thing that was wearing his father and hurt his mother. the storm outside howling against the windows, the dead of winter, the dead of his father's body in the basement where danny had gone to hide.
however, there was a SAVIOR that night, a man who came in and killed the monster with a glinting blade made of SILVER, he had told the boy. the man, DICK HALLORANN had come to save them, to tell him that that wasn't his daddy -- that it was a monster, but the monster was gone now and it couldn't hurt them anymore.

- THE LAST OF US - desolation tries to colonize you - born during the original outbreak, him and his family go to live in a quarantine zone, etc. his dad gets arrested ( producing firefly propaganda ) and subsequently executed. wendy does her best to provide and prove that they’re not with the organization, that it was just her husband, attempting to not bring anymore trauma and harm on her young child. brooding begins because wow heck off government, whatever. he decides to find out the truth for himself.
STRANGER THINGS, LAB FOCUSED ALT. - 017 - his parents had always suspected something was different about their only son daniel. after having what they call " episodes " with almost increasing intensity they discover doctor brenner, and his team in hawkins, indiana. with nowhere else to turn, and conventional doctors not providing any answers they decide to deliver the young boy to the lab at the age of four. they promised they would help their son, and truly they wanted nothing more. only, it was a lie. the lab more or less kidnapping the young boy, refusing to release him to the parents. try as they might to get him back, they failed to read the finest of the fine print -- but daniel's mother wendy would not go down without a fight which made things difficult for the lab to say the least. it's then, that danny is told they've gone "on vacation", and he never sees them again.
STAR WARS, ORIGINAL TRILOGY ALT . - there had always been a sense of secrecy around his family, things they didn't talk about. the biggest one was his father, seeing him a grand total of three times before news came that he had died. the circumstances were never clear, or kept from the young boy but a part of him knew. from there, his mother grew protective -- often moving from town to town on their home planet before leaving it all together. danny had a sense about him, abilities that would lead to questions and with the dangerous, tumultuous time the galaxy was going through those questions were best left unraised, unaddressed. it was deadly to be force sensitive, his mother knew after all that had happened. and to protect her son she'd go to any lengths to keep that part of him hidden, instilling him that he must never show these talents. still, his intuition grew, his senses growing stronger still until he could feel those like him, reach out . . . with his mind.
STAR WARS, THE MANDALORIAN ALT . - tides of war - at a tender age, tragedy had come to the young boy. merely five, he lost both his parents in an attack, something he hardly has memory of aside from the terror of the day. to his luck, he managed to hide from the onslaught at his mother's command -- running, running away from the smoking pillars that had been his childhood home. he survived a bit in the wilderness, his small size warranting him the ability to hide in places some wouldn't look. though, eventually he made his way back to the ruins, everything all but burnt down. it was there, he came into contact with a person, clad fully in armor. they took him that day, a foundling in truth. growing up as an orphan, danny tried to adapt to the customs of his saviors, they were nice, had protected him after all. he knew they were good, only in a way a child's mind could deduce. and it's there he grows up, fitting into the mold of mandalore.

danny had been born to wendy torrance out of the blue on the first of october, 1989. however he wasn’t one of the children able to be bought by reginald hargreeves, the torrances delighted with their surprise child. thanks to the fortitude of his parents, daniel grew up relatively normal, aside from the occasional imaginary friend. of course, these weren’t imaginary, danny’s telepathic ability forming a network between many of his various october surprise children. it isn’t until he’s much older that his abilities develop into something he takes to calling the shining, but it’s overwhelming, most times which lead him down darker roads.
- WESTERN / RDR .- born unto trouble . - he's made a name for himself for better or worse. DOCTOR SLEEP !_ they call him, the man with power over death. some tend to think him some devil - man, laying hands on the infirm and elderly. quick as they can, they die, but some think the opposite, an angel sent by the lord up above to assist those in the great crossin' between this and heaven. for dan, they're partially both right, feeling himself cursed by both heaven and hell. if only it stopped with laying hands, helping the dying.
usually he'll take up in a town, or a band of travelers, knowing when his time is overspent in either.

- DEAD BY DAYLIGHT - a waking nightmare - he's had the same dream ever since he was five years old. he's in a hallway, the jungle carpet sprawling out before him. there's a BANGING coming for him, a booming voice threatening him. he's heard it too many times, but regardless he always feels the same terror. and at first, he had thought it was another nightmare, waking up by a fire -- an encompassing FOG just out of reach.
the voice, the banging, the boom -- his ( FALSE FACE ) father hunting him down. but it's different now, he sees the faceless CARETAKER -- with mallet in hand. in his terror he's frozen, pleading as if he were a boy again, but killed, feeling the mallet crack his back as it had his mother. but it doesn't end there, waking up again, by the FIRE -- the voice, sounds out again from the dark. it's worse than a nightmare, this time it's real.
